A Good Cause

A Canadian mining corporation is proposing to the State of Alaska that they be permitted to develop one of the largest gold and copper mines in the world, between Lake Iliamna and the Mulchatna River, at the headwaters of the Bristol Bay watershed. This area is home to the largest Sockeye salmon run in the world, the largest Chinook salmon run in Alaska, and within Alaska’s designated trophy wild rainbow trout area. Even worse, if this mine is permitted, it may open the door to the development of a major, industrialized mining district covering thousands of square miles in the Bristol Bay watershed. Press Corps Poker Rally

For the national press corps, the 2006 FlyFishing Retailer World Trade Expo (August 24-26, 2006) is the single essential gathering for coverage of the precision, passion and personalities of the fly fishing industry.

It’s also a great place to play a little poker.

The rules are simple. At each of 12 events, the public relations staff of FlyFishing Retailer will allow attending members of the media to draw a single card. Each card will be recorded and each player’s hand will be posted daily on flyfishingretailer.blogspot.com (to be launched August 1) and available for viewing at the Cyber Café. Hands will be tallied and winners will be contacted after the close of the show on Saturday, August 26.

Prizes to be awarded include an Orvis Zero-G salt water fly rod; a fly reel from Islander Reels; three pairs of Smith Optics polarized sunglasses; the Holds Everything Tackle Bag from Abel; a choice of scissors or hemostats from Dr Slick; Cloudveil’s Flat Creek Jacket; and a selection of Buzz Off clothing from Imperial Headwear.

The 12 poker events at the upcoming FlyFishing Retailer will be posted soon!

Editors and Anglers Converge on Denver

The most influential, most beloved, and most dynamic companies in the fly fishing world are headed to Colorado for the 9th annual FlyFishing Retailer World Trade Expo.

Scheduled for August 24-26 at the Colorado Convention Center, this closed-door event is open only to the media and the hundreds of companies that comprise an industry built on a simple but powerful premise -- tricking a fish into taking a fly.
