Five More Minutes of Fly Fishing

Now and again, we are all fortunate enough to wintess something truly unique and inspirational, and such was the case last year at The Drake magazine's Five Minutes of Fly Fishing Video Awards. If you missed it last time, here's another opportunity to attend as The Drake will again be hosting one of the must-attend events scheduled during the 2007 FlyFishing Retailer show.

After an absolutely overwhelming response to last year's first Video Awards Party, The Drake Magazine will showcase another collection of talented moviemakers at Denver's historic Oxford Hotel (1600 17th Street) on Sunday, September 16 at 8:30 p.m., immediately following the FlyFishing Retailer/Islander Reels Industry Party.

Same as last year, there will be 10 five-minute films shown, with awards in the categories of best humor, best fishing, best story, and best overall film. Different from last year, there is a $1,000 prize for the best movie. With food from McCormicks and beer from New Belgium, you won't want to miss this event.

Angling Trade Magazine Acquires Fly Fishing Trade Magazine

Boulder, Colo., (For Immediate Release) – Angling Trade magazine and Fly Fishing Trade (FFT) magazine today announced an agreement under which Angling Trade will acquire Fly Fishing Trade. FFT has been the independent voice of the United States fly fishing industry since its inception in 2004.

Kirk Deeter, editor-in-chief of Angling Trade and former editor of Fly Fishing Trade, notes that the deal consolidates coverage of key issues and trends in the North American fly fishing industry under one title.

“We are excited to have this opportunity to build on the efforts of Fly Fishing Trade and pledge to continue a tradition of fair, balanced coverage of the fly fishing market in North America,” said Deeter. “We understand that we are working in an often turbulent business environment, and we will continue to bring to bear attention to key issues that only a U.S.-based magazine, run by writers and editors who embrace fly fishing as a personal passion, can deliver.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, however both parties acknowledge that a fair and equitable transaction was reached.

“There really isn’t room for two trade magazines in a marketplace the size of fly fishing. Ultimately our goal is to insure that a viable business publication exists to serve the needs of our industry. To that end, we are excited to ‘pass the torch,’ and I feel confidant that the new Angling Trade will be published with appropriate energy and focus on a market that desperately needs high-level reporting to serve the business needs of its constituents,” said Joseph E. Daniel, publisher of Fly Fishing Trade. “It’s been an honor to serve the industry in this capacity for the last three years and I hope we’ve made a positive difference to the fly fishing community. We wish Angling Trade well. We support their efforts, and I will personally continue to contribute my perspectives and efforts to ensure quality coverage of the key issues that impact this market.”

The final issue of Fly Fishing Trade will be published in early August 2007, in advance of the Fly Fishing Retailer World Expo trade show in Denver. The first issue of Angling Trade will debut in early September 2007, also in advance of the FFR show.

Congratulations, Kenji!

Kenji Haroutunian named FlyFishing Retailer Show Director

Nielsen Sports Group is proud to announce Kenji Haroutunian as the new show director for the FlyFishing Retailer (FFR) trade show, where he will manage strategic planning, staff, sales, marketing and budgeting for the annual event.

Haroutunian will work closely with the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) to encourage growth opportunities for core partners and explore relationships with new markets. He fills the vacant position most recently held by Peter Devin.

“Kenji has cultivated exceptional relationships with many groups within the outdoor industry, including our partners at AFFTA which I feel will greatly benefit all of our customers and the industry,” said Joseph Flynn, vice president, Nielsen Sports Group. “He is already tuned in to the needs of emerging and established manufacturers, chain retailers, specialty retailers and industry influencers, so we are confident he will hit the ground running. As FFR approaches, we look forward to Kenji’s expert leadership and dedication.”

Haroutunian has been a member of the Nielsen Sports Group team since 1999, most recently as a senior account executive for the Outdoor Retailer and FlyFishing Retailer trade shows. He was instrumental in producing the acclaimed Backcountry Base Camp event at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market and also helped to develop Outdoor Retailer’s Green Steps program, an environmentally-conscious business model now being adopted by other Nielsen events.

“I am thrilled and honored to lead the FlyFishing Retailer team,” commented Haroutunian. “The challenge of representing Nielsen’s integrated business solutions to the markets we serve is one I’m looking forward to meeting head on. For over 20 years I’ve been advocating for people to get outdoors, and I hope to continue my work from this new post, serving the industry with the same mission.”

Prior to his time with Nielsen Sports Group, Haroutunian spent 14 storied years at Adventure 16, where he ascended from salesperson to store manager. He has spent more than a decade teaching climbing and advanced outdoor skills through the American Mountain Guide Association and has worked with Outward Bound, Big City Mountaineers and Summit Youth Adventures, among others. Haroutunian also served as president of the Friends of Joshua Tree, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the historical tradition of climbing in Joshua Tree National Park.
